U.S. Global Change Research Program Strategic Plan Public Comment Period
The Global Change Research Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-606) called for "a comprehensive and integrated United States research program [to] assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change." This act gave rise to the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), whose mission is to "build a knowledge base that informs human responses to climate and global change through coordinated and integrated federal programs of research, education, communication, and decision support." The USGCRP has released its 2012-2021 Draft Strategic Plan for public comment. This Plan builds on the previous accomplishments of the Program's member agencies and partners. Public comment announcement with links to the Plan is at: http://www.globalchange.gov/whats-new/631-federal-register-notice-announcing -public-comment-period-for-the-usgcrp-strategic-plan. We urge you to review the Plan and provide comments to us or directly to USGCRP. The SFS Science and Policy Committee (SPC), with help from key individuals, will consolidate members' comments on this 10-year Strategic Plan, and after review by the Executive Committee, these comments will be delivered to the USGCRP as the official Society comments. In particular, the SFS will be looking at how the Plan accommodates and encourages contributions from freshwater scientists and managers. The SFS would also like to include key results from your research concerning how climate change is affecting, or is projected to affect, freshwater ecosystems. Whether or not you are submitting comments or publications directly to USGCRP, we encourage you to send your publications, comments and suggestions to the SFS: email to Evan Hornig (SPC Co-Chair) email@example.com and Paul Wagner (SPC and Board of Directors) firstname.lastname@example.org.
In a couple of weeks, we will start to consolidate and ready your comments for submittal by our Society. Please note: the deadline for submittals of comments to the USGCRP is November 29, 2011.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful submissions,
